Separately, a your-mileage-may-vary issue with the single-diode approach is the LED strips will be pulsing 60 times per second. And since LEDs are solid-state they will be completely off half the time (during the ignored negative half of the AC).

It also appears to be a one way rental, try to get unlimited mileage if you can. I have found some one-way quotes look good until you realize there is a per-mile charge. If you are a Costco member, the car rental rates via Costco Travel are usually good. From Flagstaff you can visit the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.
